A happy mama shares her birthing experience with Andrea through poem

Cate and Baby Bunny

A symphony cacophony all drums big and small

beating fast, and symbols rattling,

giant Tibetan horn blasting

as each cramp clenched me and let me go

Rounds and rounds and in came Andrea

Her face

Clear and still as a lake. A readiness.

My words unclear her reactions clear

In a way that the words and her presence formed

a constellation around me.

A moving orb that contained it all.

I remember her hands, the softness on the surface

the power and strength from underneath

Pressing my lower back, or down on my thighs for the birth

the HARD work of that

only partially from training or experience

a reflection of the steadiness and depth of her soul.

A woman, thank God a woman with me

I love Paul, but a woman

I needed him on the other thigh,

but a woman, while he channeled his anxiety by

telling me there was too much steam in the bathroom

Andrea kept pressing my lower back
